About Our Workshops

We hold instructional workshops/classes in Upper Hutt on various subjects in conjunction with other homesteaders/small holdings families and self sufficient (urban and rural) homesteaders in Upper Hutt. Each with their own skills. There are a few of us around!

If you want to attend one of our workshops, then please look at the calendar and/or subscribe for future dates. We will be in touch once there is sufficient interest with a date.

Individual prices are usually around $20-$30 but may vary depending on the resources required for certain workshops.

If you are interested in holding private workshops or workshops for fundraising, then reach out as the group of us are always interested in supporting community and local groups.

Herbs for Healing

The workshop will include an Introduction to Medicinal Preparations
And how to make
-Infusions and Decoctions
-Tinctures
-Herbal Honeys
-Syrups
-Infused Medicinal Vinegars (including firecider)
-Guidelines for Foraging and Wildcrafting
-Harvesting and Drying Herbs.
Along with how to make these for all the family from non alcoholic to alcoholic.
We will be working with herbs that have been foraged prior to the workshop by Hannah. But she will also send you a list incase you want to forage some extra yourself.
In addition, you will be given seeds for the top five medicinal herbs you should have in your garden.

Hannah Dawson, Mum of three and Homesteader. Hannah has a science background and has been healing and growing healing herbs for 20 years. She is Mum of Cernunnos Mil. 

Hannah Bupha-Intr, mama of one and one on the way. Hannah is a teacher, with a particular interest in nature kindy, who fancies herself an urban homesteader. She is half of Victory Gardens which delivers home based horticulture, and loves to support others in learning how to grow their own food. Hannah loves to spend her downtime at church and community events with her family, or helping to organise the next one!

 

Kristen Pember,Mother to three beautiful children. Loves food, plants and eating plants. Former shareholder and director of Ground Keepers as she now ventures into a new gardening business in the Wairarapa. Uses gardening to maintain stress levels in life. Likes to find the cheapest gardening options and offer free advice or gardening where she can, when she can.

Fermenting Vegetables and Krauts

In this sauerkraut and fermented veggies workshop, you will learn all about the principles of fermentation and why eating these foods is beneficial to be in good mental and physical health.

We will also talk about wild fermentation vs culturing and dry salt fermentation vs fermenting with brine.

This will be a hands on classs so you will be chopping and dicing and getting your hands salty making sauerkraut and fermented vegetables together.

What you will learn/get in the class:
Why microbes are so awesome and how fermentation can help us improve our gut and overall health.

You will learn to make your own Sauerkraut with an array of ingredients provided.

We will be fermenting a couple of different vegetables.

Materials for this class will be supplied. All you need to bring is a 1Lwide mouthed mason jar (however we can supply these for an additional cost).

We will supply a fermenting air lock to keep but also show you some tips for fermenting on a budget with a low cost diy mindset.

Homemade lacto-fermented snacks and drinks will also be served as refreshments however you will need to eat dinner before hand.

You’ll be able to take home your kraut, fermented veggies and another one of my crafty handouts. Plus a whole lot of useful tips and information that will help you kickstart your own fermentation journey!

Garden Workshops

These workshops are seasonal in nature.

Contents varies but we usually run them seasonally where we discuss seed saving (applicable to the season), plant propagation, seed sowing and pruning.

Seasonal planting boxes, these include getting all the seeds and seedlings and talking about benefits/reasons for growing all the plants in whatever space you have.

Foraging Workshops

We hold free no frills foraging walks in Upper Hutt. These are held at different locations in Upper Hutt every time and always locations Hannah has never been to before.

 You are more than welcome to contact Hannah for more personal walks, however there will be a fee with these.

Preserving 101

This workshop will include the basics and a 101 of preserving. including the differences with waterbathing/overflow and pressure canning. you will learn the ins and outs of safe preserving, including low sugar preserving options. All the tips and tricks for cost effective preserving on a low budget. Including tricks around Jar recycling.
